Le nom est originaire de Sicile, où il s'écrit aussi Leonti, Leonte, Lionte. Il devrait s'agir d'un nom de personne, équivalent de Léon (= lion), mais formé sur le grec "leontos". À noter que, dans une de ses pièces ("le Conte d'hiver"), Shakespeare donne le nom de Léonte à un de ses personnages, roi de Sicile.
